Password Protected Section?

Do you think we could get a password protected board here? It would be useful for things we don't necessarily want the general public to see, kind of like Cindy's recent "limited time viewing" post. I'm sure she wouldn't want her clients seeing the before pictures. Wink I know we have to keep things PG13, due to COPPA rules, and as long as we keep things "bathing suit" proper (showing as much skin as you would see if someone were wearing a bathing suit) there isn't a problem, but sometimes you really don't want to show those to the world. There was actually quite a bit of discussion on this when we started.  What was decided is that in order to keep the forum as accessible as possible, the boards would be open to guests.  The business board is an exception because it was felt that we needed a place to talk about business issues that wouldn't show up in Google but the only requirement to see that particular board is that you're logged in.  If you log out you'll see a business board, but the only thread in it is something along the lines of "we have a business board that you'll see when you log in".

It's possible to setup a board that's only accessible to certain members.  Similar idea to the pro critique board where only members of the Pro Critique Panel can respond to posts.  My concern with doing that though is that a lot of really good conversations would be hidden from the bulk of our membership.  Plus there would have to be some way to "apply" to be able to view that board and determine whether the member should be able to get into the club so to speak.

I have been wondering the same sort of thing.  I understand the business board thing, and I think it's great that it can't be googled.  But I keep in mind it is not secure, anyone can register here and view that board.  So I don't say bad things about clients, etc.

However, I too have wondered how I could get some critique on my latest project.  I am not shooting any nudity, think more along the lines of Victoria's Secret catalog.  However, I don't necessarily want these images viewed by just anyone.  I was thinking I might just post and ask those who would be willing to give me some critique to private message me.

Susie, that's how my next shoot is going to be, too. She even mentioned how she wants to do Victoria's Secret posing. Smiley

I think it could be sort of a reward type board. After x number of posts, you get the password. It would encourage posting, and we would know if the person is truly interested in the board before they're allowed in.

I definitely see your points, and I do think it's something worth considering.  As soon as I hit the post button on this one I'm going to go and start a thread with the moderators and get their input as well.

First, what you're asking is fairly easy from the technology side.  The forum software has the ability to assign users to multiple groups and I can base forum permissions on those groups.  And I can even set a group to be automatic after a certain number of posts.

My biggest concern is that all of the "good" conversations would move over to the private section and not be accessible to all the members.  I've seen forums go both ways with this.

The other concern is that if that board is used for posting the "Victoria's Secret" type shots then there would have to be some way to validate age and I don't know of a good way to do that.

I don't know about Marian, but I am not doing nudity.  I will be doing shots that use implied nudity, but I am not going to post those.  Of course we could always censor the shot in photoshop before posting if we really want critique on it.

Ryan, I don't care one way or another because I can see all your points.  We certainly want and need new members and don't want to exclude anyone that wants to learn.  I don't even know how much I will have to post anyway, because I feel that even posting on a private board would require my clients to sign a model release and I am not requiring that for something sensitive like what I am doing.

I'm not doing nudity, either, LOL. I said they were going to be Victoria's Secret style posing, not clothing, ha ha. I think the swimsuit guide is always a good measure as to whether something can be posted or not. Smiley

One thing to consider is that even if the model or client is fully covered some images have an intimate nature that they may not want shown around the web and others may not want to see them.  Regardless of what is decided about a private board this brought up a good subject about what is appropriate and how we should treat sensitive images.  Perhaps we should adopt a policy that if anyone in the image is posing or dressed in a way that others might find offensive we should flag the post in the subject line.  I don't think this board really sees a lot of those types of images, but it would be helpful to have guidelines about how to post them.

Marian, off the topic (sort of) you should check out Maxim magazine if you are looking for posing ideas that are along the lines of VS.  You can go to their website and find a lot of good stuff.

I've actually been working on that and there's been some discussion about it between the moderators.
