ISO is an organization that sets standards for all sorts of technical applications. The ISO number for film speed is
ISO 5800. CDs are generally written in ISO 9660 format. And my personal favorite is the ISO standard for storing gender in databases -
ISO 5218. And if you're really bored and not quite staring like a deer yet, here's a
list from Wikipedia of the ISO standards.
What's important is that it means that Adobe is no longer in total control of the PDF format. It's now a "standard". Any changes have to be approved by ISO, although I would imagine that Adobe still will play a part in that.

I deal in radioactive materials, and we have our own standards.
"ISO 3103 Method of brewing tea for the purpose of sensory tests". That one sounds fun...
