PDF is now an ISO standard

With a 13-to-1 vote, the International Organization of Standards voted to make the PDF file format an ISO standard.  Don't know how that will affect PDFs, but it does mean that Adobe is no longer the sole entity deciding on changes to the format which I think is a good thing as widespread as the PDF format is.

ISO is an organization that sets standards for all sorts of technical applications.  The ISO number for film speed is ISO 5800.  CDs are generally written in ISO 9660 format.  And my personal favorite is the ISO standard for storing gender in databases - ISO 5218.  And if you're really bored and not quite staring like a deer yet, here's a list from Wikipedia of the ISO standards.

What's important is that it means that Adobe is no longer in total control of the PDF format.  It's now a "standard".  Any changes have to be approved by ISO, although I would imagine that Adobe still will play a part in that.
