Ok, I feel really funny about asking this, considering it's what my mom used to do for a living (but I would rather not ask her due to the subject of the image).

I need to take a picture of a picture.  A client has a snapshot of herself her boyfriend took of her when they first were dating.  She wants it included in the digital album I am putting together for her.  I would just scan it, but my scanner isn't working.  It's a little risque, so I don't want to take it anywhere.  So I am attempting to take a picture of the picture.  It's a 4x5, and doesn't need to be very big, we are putting it in the corner of a full page spread of her now in the same pose.

Any tips?  My mom has a tripod mounted to a big board thingy with clips and these big weird lights.... I have a kitchen table and a tripod...  I am just worried about getting glare.

Susie . . . you are over complicating this . . .

You are shooting digital.  If you get glare, move the picture and try again.

You do need to hold the camera as close to parallel to the photo as possible.  If you are a little off, it should be fine.  Just use a middle aperture.  You are going to lose a little saturation, but you can punch it up in PS.

What's up with all of the risque work?

It won't be as good of a quality but, basically, lean the image up, no frame and glass, and fill your frame and fire away, in a nice naturally lit room, you won't get glare.

Like this, I used a point and shoot digital cam in my early digital days.   Big Grin

Thanks guys, I just need to get my camera out and do it.  I just used to watch my mom take forever copying old pictures, but sometimes she was taping them together on the back, and then all the time to develop them... I guess taking the picture was the quick part.

It pays the bills Smiley  I have just gotten into boudoir photography and it's been a huge hit.  I wish I could show you guys all the great stuff I am getting, but in my contract I state I will keep their images private, so it limits what I can show unless they give me written permission.
It's been a blast actually and I haven't even advertised besides in some free places and I have been getting emails and calls left and right.  Just wait until I really start advertising!

It was the break I needed, the wedding arena is jam packed with great photographers.  I just miss working with my husband.  He isn't involved in this much at all.

Sorry, I am chatty today, but you asked Smiley

The best light to do this is outside on an overcast day. Smiley I take photos of my artwork all the time. It's how I make the prints. Just make absolutely sure that the photo is flat, that no corner is curling upwards, or you will get shadowing in that area.

Oh . . . this was a much different process using film!  Depending on how long ago it was, she may have been using ISO 25 or 50 film which means slower speeds and wider apertures.  You also had to shot more because you got less instant feedback.

Nobody here minds you being chatty!

I too copy artwork. All of karen's paintings online are photos of the paintings.

To me the overcast day or in the shade will each work. if the photo is shiney make sure you're back far enough not to reflect in it then zooom. The photo must be square to the camera if the photo is leaning or the camera is tipped a tiny bit the lines in the image won't be straight.

It's July in the dessert, overcast days are what I dream about (that's it, I am moving in with Marian, sign me up for the wet Washington weather).

I am going to just shoot in the house and correct the color balance.

Really I should just take the dang picture, but I have so much other editing to do, and just 10 minutes ago I booked yet another boudoir session!!!

Yep. And it's overlooking our pond and the deer come along and eat the clover. Then, at night, you can see the Milky Way.

Shut up, people here in the city think the Milky Way is just a candy bar, all I get to see is smog, lovely smog.

Ah, I'm on the other side of the nation.  I am in Salt Lake City, and before you laugh it's the 13th most populated metro area in the U.S., thank you very much.

And no, I don't practice polygamy, thank you very very much Smiley
