bl-mode?

What was your f-stop for this? Looks really shallow.

that shot is a little more complex then the aperture setting. actually it wasnt done  so much via f-stop choice . it was done in idiot mode or p mode on the camera because i used fill flash in balanced mode.

balanced mode works great in programmed mode because the nikon cameras are smart enough not to go above flash sync speed in daylight in that mode.

.. i used the vignette blurr filter in the nik color effex 3.0 filter set in post processing with nikon capture nx2 software. i used it so only the hands and camera came through.

fill flash was used to get all the detail in the rim around the lens....  then the nik tonal contrast filter from the same set was used to only apply it to the lens and keep the hands softer looking.  otherwise the  tonal contrast filter would show every pore in the hand like it shows every mark in the lens rim..

i just love that set of filters as it allows us to do so many different effects that would take quite a lot of time to do by hand.

total time to do all the above, under 1 minute.

I'm sure this is a silly thing to say, but she has beautiful hands.  She should be a hand model.

There are guys on this site (strobist.com) that are somehow syncing their cameras and flashes at very high shutter speeds in daylight, they are mostly Nikon nuts and are using mostly Nikon speedlights.  I have never looked into what modifications or techniques they are using to obtain some of their "broad daylight" images, but you may be interested... check them out, it's a very cool blog regardless, and may allow you to control your depth of field in camera a little closer to your original intent instead of having to do as much post work.  Just a thought.
