Prints on Aluminum

Last week I attended the Photo Plus show in NYC.  I have been for about 15 years in a row now and there is always something.  One of the things that I saw a lot of is companies printing photographic images on various metals.  Mostly, this was aluminum.

I have order a sample pack from one company, AluminAtre (www.aluminarte.com) and I am waiting to see what they send.  The sample that they had the show, including wedding and portrait images, were very impressive.

As anyone worked with any of these companies?  I don't know about prices yet and it may only be good as a sample to make an impression.  I don't expect it to generate a lot of orders.

I am very interested in what all of you think . . .

Ed, I would need to do a little more research on it, and I have not tried any prints like this myself, but here's a little info.

Maxima has a line of albums in their Nouvea collection called Eclipse (the covers are etched aluminum) that I got to see and hold at our IPPA convention in Oct.  They were very nice in my opinion and have a very cool and unique look.  The process of the etching involves a laser and can be controlled to very extreme precision at the hands of a talented individual.  It is a practice that has been used for part marking in metal manufacturing and assembly environments for years, it is very proven and has lots of up-to-date cool tools and advanced software.  The etching is very permanent, however it could be buffed off with some patience with something as common as a scouring pad or steel wool (this may also be a fun way to add your own 'touch' to it).  Also, scratches may show up in it very easily; especially in the darker areas of an image.  To my knowledge, this would only be for black and white images, I do not know of a way to do color images with the kind of control a photograph would need on a metal surface; but then what would be the purpose of the aluminum anyway.  I would warn about doing this on just any metal, not all metals will maintain their 'look' over long periods of time like aluminum and a few others.

Well, I spoke too soon.  I should've checked the link first.  They are promoting color images, which are certainly not laser engraved.  Now I am very interested as to what their process is.  Hmmm, I am going to have to start looking into this some more.  Thanks for providing me with something to research.

One note of caution, even 1/16" thick aluminum can be quite heavy to hang on a wall if the print size were to be very big.  You would want to educate your client on how to best support it securely I think.

I recieved some samples in the mail today.  They are AMAZING.  When my situation improves, I intend to have 2 of my photos of my kids done.  They are so vibrant and beautiful.  They are a tad pricey however, but definately worth looking into.

A little more info:  I also recieved my samples and got a look at the price list.  Although I do think that the prints look very impressive, the price has me concerned business wise.  A 16x20 print is about $150.  This means that I have to get around $250 for a 16x20.  I believe that this is out of range for my target market.  I may still order one to hang as a sample and I have been thinking about doing one for each of my son's bedrooms.

Thanks,
