Sweet Smile

I posted one image from this session in the Pro Critique Board, but I wanted to share some with you guys as well for comments.  I have a personal soft spot for profiles of young children, I don't know why; but I do nonetheless.  This one's not quite a true profile, but it's close enough for me.  They never hold very still, so I will accept an image this close to what I envisioned anytime.  Feel free to tell me what your thoughts are.

Thanks.

Travis

The light is just beautiful.  Is that natural window light?
And yeah, she has a beautiful smile.  (I love the little ringlets in her hair too).
Wish I could do light like that.  Just Beautiful!

First thing that I said in my mind was, "Classical"
Beautiful capture, cute smile.

Cheers

It's because their noses are so dang cute.
This image is gorgeous, I don't care if it's a perfect profile.  In fact I was thinking about that yesterday.  Awhile back there was an image I had of a bride that I thought was beautiful, however another photographer said it wasn't portfolio-usable because you could see the eyelashes from the far eye which made it not a perfect profile.  I, on the other hand, liked the image because of it, she had long gorgeous dark lashes.
Anyway, I love this image and if I were the mother I would buy a huge print and hang it on the wall.  As I am not her mother that would be creepy if I did that huh?

You're probably right.

You're probably right again.

Thanks for all the kind words.  No, it is not window light, but here is a diagram and some explanation of how I did it:

The main is a 24"X36" feathered from the far side and pointing back toward the camera.  It is about 3' from her and more in front of her than 45 deg to her (in order to get the catchlight to show).  I then placed a 42" silver reflector straight across from the main and rotated just so slightly toward her.  The hairlight is accomplished with a 7" silver reflector positioned behind the background and pointed at the white ceiling.  I like this hairlight effect a lot because you end up with a separation light from about 1' from the background to about 6' from it.  It is very soft and spills over just enough, I think.  Also, I don't have to worry about moving it a lot because it covers a large area quite evenly so the subject can move around without it causing problems (great for kids).  I actually saw this set up done very similarly by John Woodward (a primarily commercial and fashion photographer from NY).  The biggest difference is, he had a 6"X36" strip light (soft box).  I don't, so I compromised and bounced the light off the ceiling.  I actually got better results than I thought I would.

Thanks again for looking, I'm glad you like it.

Thanks for the diagram Travis.  Would it be alright if I save it and print it out?

I am not following the reflector behind the background.  Huh? How can a reflector pick up light from behind the background? I'm mega confused (so what else is new...  Grin )

Cindy, yes of course you can print it out.

Marian (did I get that right?), the reflector I am talking about is a silver dish that goes around the light on my strobe.  Not a reflector in the sense you are thinking I assume.  The light is then pointed straight up at the ceiling and bounced off of it for the hair light.
