Texture Overlay Tutorial

Pages [1] 2 3
Hi Everyone,
I wanted to share a short Texture Tutorial.  It seems it's the newest "fad", and actually, I really love the result.  In the following tutorial, I am using textures from Jesh De Rox (who had record breaking WPPI wins at last years contests).  Not to say this in any way comes close to his work, which is truly incredible.
There are several free places to get textures.  Try: www.textureking.com

Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy the tutorial, and I hope to see photos you texturize in this thread.  Don't be afraid to pile on the textures.  Sometimes it's really cool, and the clients seem to love them.

1.  Open the image you want to use:

2.  Open the texture you want to use.  Remember, if it has a color tone, that will show through.  If you like the texture, but not the color, just desaturate the texture image.

3.  Drag you new texture over the image you want to use.  ( Shift/Drag will position it in the middle.  You might need to use transform on some smaller texture images to make it the right size)

4.  Now, make sure you are still on the texture image layer, and use the lighting draw down box to choose how you want things.  Scroll through using your +/- keys to easily toggle through your options.  I chose "overlay"

5.  Now you can "see through" your overlay.  Play with the opacity to find a look you like.  Don't look at where you don't want it.  Look at only where you do want it.

6.  Use your eraser tool, at a lowish opacity to erase over areas you want to remain "clean".

7.  And Viola....you are done!

Happy Photoshopping!

Awesome tutorial Cindy.  Thanks for taking the time to do screen captures instead of just explaining it in words.  I have an image in mind I want to play with if I get time tonight.  I will post my results.

Wait...how did you just drag an image to make it a layer?

Good question, might be a CS3 thing (I don't know though).  In Elements I can just copy and paste it as a new layer.

Opps sorry....
When I have images open, I go to the layers pallet to drag them over.  Like this:

(Different photos of couse but they were handy.

If you drag using your shift key, it will place the image smack center.  It's a good trick for working on albums too.

Oh!!!!!!! Thanks for clarifying. I've been dragging my image all over the place and couldn't get it to do what you said, LOL!

Really wonderful tutorial.  Clapping

Hehe.
I'm glad you enjoy the tutorial.  I'll try to upload some more weird and wacky tutes soon.

Your tatoo stuff would be killer with some texture!  Try it with some. :-)

Well, I'll be at the computer doing some printing tonight for a client (gotta love "do you still have my photos online...I want to buy more" customers!) so I'll play while they're printing! Smiley

Okay...here's my first attempt!

First is the original, second is with the texture layer.

Love the Texture overlays.

Here a couple of mine that I have done.  I use them a lot with seniors.
