The Dreaded Ring Light Image

Most of the time when I post one of these I get comments from my fellow photographers screaming flat lit, ugly, hate those wierd catchlights.  The comments I got from the girls in these images was a little bit different. I love it I'm going to buy this one WOW!

You have to do what you like no matter if it is "right" or "wrong".  Using excuses for poor quality work is one thing, these aren't poor quality.
I don't mind the "weird" catchlights except in the last one.  It is a little intense and the eyes have a piercing look.  I like the photograph though, overall.

Speaking of catchlights, Travis and I were just talking about how in Lord of the Rings they use catchlights as a special effect.  They wanted Galadriel to have an ethereal quality about her so they used something similar to a wreath of white Christmas lights above the camera on her close up shots to make her eyes sparkle in an otherworldly way.

The catchlights from the ring light aren't my taste, but if you like the look and it is intentional that is what matters.

Nice shots, but, I have never been a fan of ring lights.

Lord of the rings rules.

I actually like the ring light shots, except for catch lights. Saw some shots where the photographer edited the catchlights into quarter moon shapes, really cool.

Somebody, Alien Bees maybe, has a set of covers (yes, I know that's not the right term) that go over their ring lights to change the shape of the catch lights.  Of course it changes the overall shape of the lighting as well.

And wouldn't you rather get a wow from a client than another photographer?  They're the ones paying the bill  Grin

Are ring lights used in glamour photography?  Is that what they are for?  Do you use other lights in conjunction with a ring light?

I've seen ring lights used in fashion, it's common, I still don't like what it does to the pupils though.
