I have some questions about the final output or product, the print. Mike brought up a point on another thread that printers can't reproduce detail in shadows below 10 and highlights above 245. Is this a truth across the board? What about "X" brand paper or "Z" brand printer? Does it make any difference, or are you truly stuck to working in this range?
Also, is this the full range of the image, or does the ouput values on the Levels menu actually generate the needed tonal values that will fit for a printer? For example, could you set your output levels to 10 and 245 respectively and still have the image show areas as 255 white that could still reproduce in the final print?
Last question, does this rule of thumb apply to all printing methods, or only to inkjet printing? I am still using a lab that prints with a machine that produces traditionally printed products from my digital files. They are not ink or dye based prints.
I really don't know the answer to these questions, so please feel free to chime in with any information.
