Train Station

Pages [1] 2
I took my family to scout out a train station where I was shooting a model.  This is my daughter.  I know, I like them because I think she is cute even if she doesn't have proper portrait lighting on her face Smiley
I did better with the model, I used some fill light.  But I still thought these were worth making it to Ginny's photo album.

Another one, and yikes, I had a hard time getting the yellow tinge out of skin from the reflection of the trains on both sides of us.

So, what did you do to get the yellow out of the skin, would you share your process.?

I just played with the levels then went to the color balance sliders, those worked well since there was a lot of yellow in the highlights but not the midtones.  I did all that after adding some contrast.
I would have normally cheated and just turned it black and white since it's not an image for a client, but her shirt is so bright and not really in key with the rest of the image so it didn't work well.  Although that would have solved the flowers on the socks.  I should have dressed her more appropriately and actually did her hair cute.

Do you think maybe the white balance in the camera may have helped?

Do you think maybe the white balance in the camera may have helped?

Not sure, it would have been worth a shot, but we were moving from train to train, some were bright blue and some where black and this one was yellow as well as the one across from us.  I would love to say I was being lazy, but part of it is that I don't know how to change the white balance for such unnatural light, it wasn't like I could just say "hey, I am dealing with tungsten/flouresant/whatever".  So, it's lack of experience instead.  Sad

Well, you're gonna hate me for saying it... but RAW and a color balance card could have done wonders... and saved you a lot of time.

I'm running away now, sorry for lighting the fire again.

Thanks Travis.

Can't someone just say "cute kid" and just think to themselves what an amateur I am?    Cry  (look there is a crying smiley, that's an oxymoron, lol).

Cute kid!!! Grin But I'm NOT going to think you're an amateur, no matter how much you beg.  Cheesy

Aw Thanks Marian.  You just made my day, lol.
Good thing my ineptness at photography didn't take away from her cuteness  Big Grin

No one thinks you're an amateur.  I wish you wouldn't take it so personal.  You mentioned that you struggled with the colors here, I thought this place was about helping each other out.  Apparently its only for help that is approved of by the poster.  Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Of course you know I think your daughter's adorable.  As photos for an album for you to keep and treasure of your daughter growing up, these are absolutely wonderful images.  She will love them as will you and your husband.  I'm sorry for going off on some other tangent that was not your intent with this post.

Hold the phone! Before you place another frowny face here, let me say something. We all, no matter who you are on this forum, have our weak areas and our strengths. You are AMAZING at bringing out the best in a woman. So don't you start pouting, young lady. Smiley When I see your sexy photos, all I can do is say "wow" most of the time. So when you post something that needs a little help, it is natural for us to say, "hey, here's something I can help her with, finally." Don't take it personally. Take it as a compliment. Heck, I get "complimented" all the time, bwahahaha.

I'll have to confess I'm with Travis on this one.  That first photo should be on a wall. It fits in the "perfect candid" category. And your daughter is beautiful.

I am seriously not hurt or upset.  I think it's just that in my original post I noted that I knew these weren't great.  I am open for suggestions.  I really am.  I did feel that I overcame the issues I dealt with at this location and I posted them in another thread right after this one.
Sorry, I am being more playful than hurt, but it's not coming across.
I know this is a photography forum, and I am SO grateful for the help I do get and the chance to help others too.  I did hesitate putting these pictures up, because they are of my daughter, and I knew they weren't great but I did like them for mom reasons.

And Marian, thanks, I do know we all have our strengths and weaknesses, and we all have different ways of doing things.  And thanks for the real compliments Wink
