Typos, Spelling, and Grammar - Common Web Design ProblemsLibrary Thread

Truthfully this is one that I hadn't planned on but I found myself guilty of several times while moving this series of posts over from another site of mine.  It's amazing how many different ways you can screw up "common web design problems".

Typos, Spelling, and Grammar

Would you send out an advertisement with misspellings?  What about grammar that would make your 6th grade English teacher cringe?  Did you check for typos?

If you spend so much time going over a half page printed ad, why don't you spend the same amount of time on a web page?  Your web page is an important part of your marketing but too many people just quickly throw up a web page without spending the time to proof it.  Maybe it's because they don't see their site as important as it is.  Maybe it's because it doesn't cost them anything aside from time to put another post on their blog.  But it is important.  Your potential clients are reading your site and basing their opinion, at least in part, on what they're reading.

One word I see just about every day that is misspelled is "loose" for "lose."  If you "loose" something it means it was bound tightly but you released it from it bonds.  If you "lose" something you have misplaced it.

It's funny, I just ran across a spelling thing.  I am using a model for a new project I am doing and I was choosing between two girls.  They both have websites and one of them had a lot of spelling errors.  I didn't choose her.  Although I am sure poor spelling doesn't mean poor modeling it just seemed like she wasn't as intelligent and wouldn't take direction as well.  Maybe that is not the case, but it made me think that.

Anytime I see a website which has a spelling or grammar error, I email the owner with corrections. I have *never* had someone say "get lost." They are always very thankful. I am a moderator on a huge forum creation site, and most of the forums are created by 13-18 year olds. It is very sad how many of them can't spell common words or put together a decent sentence. Tongue

The one that really gets me is "prolly" instead of "probably."

I think "prolly" is just slang used in texting, not a mispelled word.  I don't think anyone verbally says "prolly", at least I pronounce the b's in the word...  It just like saying "brb" for "be right back", I think...

The things that make me cringe when I go to some websites are not necessarily spelling missteaks misstakes (darn, this is hard, LOL  Big Grin) mistakes (yeah, that's the ticket), but the usage of: "Their", "There", and "They're".

Their: signifies (loosely) possession. Such as "their house", "their street", "their camera", "their children", etc.

There: a place that is not "here". Such as: The chair is over "there".

They're: a contraction of "they are".

Example: When asked where they were, they responded, "They're already there at their cottage".

Language is fun is it not?

There are no excuses for misspelled words or grammar. Programs are built in the computer such as spelling and grammar or word software.

Even as I type, if I spell a word incorrectly, a red line appears under the word that needs correcting.   Drinks
