Under Construction Pages - Common Web Design ProblemsLibrary Thread

This is part of a series of posts that I'm putting together on what I see as common web design problems.  You may not agree with me on any of them, but it should at least give you something to think about.

Under construction pages

Sure, your site is probably under a constant state of change.   But if you're going to link to a page there should be more there than just an 'Under Construction' or 'Coming Soon' message.  If you haven't finished your senior portfolio page, just don't put a link to it.

And please don't use any of the following images on a commercial site.  But they are kind of cool in a nerdy sort of way so I had to include a few.

My wife uses those when it's... as a sign, instead of, not tonight honey, I have a headache.   ROFL   Off Topic

I hate, hate, hate those under construction images. They say n00b to me. Totally unprofessional in every way. I also hate the "...coming soon" pages. If you don't have content, don't link to the page.  Tongue

I'll admit to being guilty of "coming soon", but only in one situation.  When I register a new domain I'll put up a coming soon page until the project is ready to go live.  Registering a domain name is one of the first things I do when starting a new project and having something there gives search engines a chance to let the domain age a little.  But once the site is at least partially active I'll stop using coming soon on any pages.

GoDaddy automatically places a "Coming Soon" page for you whenever you purchase a domain from them.  I have used them until I got a redirect setup or a website ready to go as well.

True, but they place ads on it and are making money from your domain name until you do something else with it.

An example of what I do with new domains is www.ryannutt.com.  It's got a coming soon message and nothing else.  But I'm actually a little embarrassed about that one.  I registered that domain name on 12/1/05 and it's been coming soon ever since.   Maybe it's about time I actually do something with that domain.

with new domains I just redirect them to my main site until I have something to put up.  I just registered a name for my "boudoir" studio, but for now it just goes to www.charlesbarnard.com

As for "coming soon" pages.  I hate them too.  I did use one recently though, I am sorry to say, but I really felt it was the best option.  I use a graphic for my gallery page, different parts of the image are clickable for my wedding gallery, my family gallery and so forth.  So there was an image and a link for my portrait gallery but until I had it complete it linked to a coming soon page.  I could have made it non-clickable, but I didn't want people thinking it just didn't work.  But I guess regardless of if I did that right or not it is fixed now, I have content up.

Well, in geologic time, it's but a whisper....... Smiley
