Vegas, with an old world feel.

Let me start by saying that I'm not a wedding photographer, and I don't play one on TV either. But one of my close friends from high school married last Saturday and I helped them out. They wanted a wedding to fit their eccentric personalities so it was a big spoof on the Blues Brothers movie and a Vegas theme. Complete with the best man doing a cartwheel into place to start singing the opening scene from the movie. No, I'm not joking.

Anywhoo, I wanted Krystal to have something a little more traditional to make her mother happy so I came up with this.

Original, creative, well done on the colorization, very nice sepia.
Rosy cheeks? I have mixed opinions, either in or out, but, thinking about it, has that Pin up look to the image, sure, it works.

I wasn't sure if I should comment here or in the non-pro section as I feel my critique isn't really going to be helpful.  This style is completely different from anything I do.  It's a matter of taste at that point.  I am not a fan of selective coloring but it's liked by clients.  I also don't like grain in pictures.
Now, I am not saying I don't like the image.  A themed wedding or event calls for themed pictures.  I think you did a good job of capturing what they were going for while also making something for mom.  I would be interested in seeing the color version though, since it looks like the flowers might have been bright and fun.

Here you go. The blue flowers were very dark.
This is just a layer with color that I grabbed, not a finished image.
BTW she made all the flower arrangements herself.

They have a dining room full of old family prints from the late 1800's, I wanted them to have something that fit with the rest of their family history.

I have a feeling your sepia edit will be a HIT.

Why oh why did you have her sit down?  Full length images of seated people tend to make them look short and heavy.  The wedding gown tends to make virtually any woman look short and heavy.  Flat lighting tends to make anyone look heavy.  Then we have the bride who is in reality short and heavy. Is there a bride in the universe that wants to look short and heavy?  EVERY bride I have ever photographed wanted to look tall thin and regal.

She wanted a shot with all of the bouquets that she had made. This was the best I came up with on the fly that wouldn't make them look like some stuff that was thrown around her feet at the last minute.

Benji,

You forgot to write how to make short fat people look thin with only a dedicated flash, I would like to know.

Well there are strobists out there that will tell you to get the light off camera... but that's another thread.

I like the color better but I understand the need for the other look for the client.  A lot of time went into those flower arrangments.

As for posing, I understand what you meant about having stuff thrown at her feet.  The alternative I would suggest was to have her sitting on her hip with her legs extended, bring the dress out to give a longer appearance to legs.  She would support herself on one hand and hold her bouquet with the other hand (preferably covering up any trouble spots, but as low as possible to give her torso a longer leaner appearance).  The one thing to watch for would be to not have her put all her weight on the hand that is supporting her, it will give an unflattering shape to her upper arm.
Of course, you can't go back and do that again with this bride, so try it next time.

I wish Ed Shapiro would give advise on this one.

What I like to see is something different to the typical, roll on hip and extend the legs etc. done too many times, what different pose can be done from this position?

John, was there enough room to bounce the flash? Ceiling, or off a white shirt
Sometimes dialing down 1/3 may help also.

Probably done a lot because it does seem to work, imo... Smiley
