What is the term for . . .

I am trying to recall the term used to describe photographs (or, I suppose, paintings) where there is text included in the final print.

I am not talking about a picture with a sign in it and I am not talking about captions.  I am talking about cases where the photographer adds text to the print in order to alter or otherwise expand the meaning of the photograph.

The only photographer that I can think of right now who used this regularly is Duane Michaels.

Thanks for the help,

I don't know what the term is, but I googled Duane Michaels and I really like the effect.  The text looks hand written and is more documentary than a title.  It has a poignant feel to it.  His images tell stories.  I was really moved by them, and I want to create something like this so bad, but I feel so uncreative in documentary stuff.  I don't have ideas that are as witty and thought provoking - so frustrating.

Hi Ed. There are several groups in which he fits.

"Visual Narrative," "Symbolic Art," "Conceptual," and "Photo Montage" (also called "photomixage" by some). Smiley

Marian,

I don't think that you quite understood the question . . . I am not asking to classify Duane Michaels.  I know that there is a name for this.  I even knew it at one time!

Susie,

I have been interested in his work since I happened on a show of his work at ICP in New York.

Thanks,

Ed, I love his work, but I have decided that trying to copy it would be just that - copying - and it would be like de-valueing it to me if I even tried, not that I would come close.  I need to find my own artistic thing to create.  Don't get my wrong I love the portrait/wedding work I do.  But it's work, I do it for other people, they pay me, so I work for them.

Typography or Iconography maybe?

I read his interview, he calls himself an Expressionist, to get a term, that's a difficult one.
