What you find with longer lenses

I was really surprised at the shallow depth of field (even at f/16) of my new 300mm lens and the difficulty of focusing it. On auto focus, it struggles, especially in anything other than bright sunlight. If I put it on manual, it's really touchy. One small degree and you're out of focus. This is the longest lens I've ever had and am having fun playing with it. Anything else I should look out for?

Right on, bright sunny

ISO 200, 800 F8  give or take a little.
View the histogram instead of the picture on LCD. Go by histo for exposure.

cool shot.
I want a long lens...  Although, yeah, I struggle with focus on the longest length of the lens I have.  Same problem, my auto focus struggles.  I don't use manual focus,  so I have to just be really careful, and I use those little boxes through the viewfinder that show where the focus is going.

one thing you have to watch for with a long >100mm lens is that you focus on a person's eye and not the tip of their nose.

just changed the focus on these two shots.
both shot at 135mm
