Where do you shop?

Pages [1] 2
As many of you may remember, I had some gear stolen this summer.  I have already replaced the primary stuff, but now I am looking to replace a few other items.

After you check B&H, Adorama and KEH, where do you look for used gear these days?  I used have a "Favorites" folder with about 50 different used shops around the country, but it seems like most have disappeared.

Thanks for the help,

I used to use eBay, but it turned into a sellers market . . . has that changed any?

I have too often seen used gear bid up over the new B&H price.  I don't think that most people should be allowed to use an auction site!

I think it just requires patience.
I just sold some photo stuff for super cheap on ebay.
And my new to me camera was fairly priced also.

..I havent shopped photo stuff on ebay for very long so I cant speak to whether its changed any or not.
It does seem like you can get good prices on things generally at the moment if youre in the position to buy. Many people are being forced to sell. At least, thats the impression I get.

I get some of mine from amazon.com, surprisingly. Oh, and Eagle Optics. Great service!

Travis helped me find my equipment, Adorama and Alien Bees were the online places I shopped at.  Some stuff I bought locally.

Don't buy a camera from eBay.  Tripods, reflectors, stuff like that is fine.  I bought a brand new camera in the box from eBay.  I did get a good deal on it, but then it had a problem and I didn't have a store to go to.  There also wasn't warranty info, so I was out a camera.  Since then I have purchased all my cameras from Pictureline, a local camera store.  They are not overpriced, but you won't find a deal there either.  BUT, their staff is nice and knowledgable and if I have a problem they are in town and I can talk to a real person.  I did the same thing with my computer.  We had it custom built from a store nearby that I can physically take it to if I have a problem.  I ordered one online awhile ago and when the video card didn't work I had to wait for them to mail it to me then install it myself (I know nothing about hardware).  So buy from a local reputable company for the big stuff, and find your bargains on the less important or less technical things.

Ed, I know you already replaced your camera, I guess I am just soapboxing here, I don't want someone else to make the mistake I did.

Yeah, I'd be pretty apprehensive about buying from eBay.  I've bought a few older cameras off eBay, but I wanted them for decoration so I don't care if they work or not.

Cameras and expensive stuff I usually get from B&H, although Amazon does have some pretty good prices on a lot of gear as well.  Houston also has a couple of pretty good camera stores locally, but both are having to cater to the more consumer type market and really don't stock a lot of the gear I'm looking at.  One does do pretty well stocking backgrounds and supports though.  I've bought several rolls of paper, a background setup, a couple of tripods, bags, and a few light stands from them.  They're also really knowledgeable if you go in on a weekday.  Over the weekend the crew isn't as good.

with ebay - you just need the time to keep looking for the deals to come up.

with the right wording  and warrenty for the right price.  which IS  possible.

If you use ebay try this.

an old trick searching ebay is to miss spell the key words (or search around the key words). There may be ten Sigma 50-500 Nikon mounts that closing bid is around $900 but the one guy selling a Signa nobody bids on. I purchased several things that way. if you're interested in an 18-200VR search for 20 in camera lens.

Be careful buying camera parts and only buy from people that will give you a full refund if it doesn't work.

Cameta (www.cameta.com) is one of the best/biggest used camera stores in the country. They sell on ebay but you can call them and ask if they have a particular thing.

I bought a lens from Cameta... against my own advice, but it turned out with a happy ending.

The camera I did buy off eBay was new and worked fine for a long time, however when it did malfunction it would have been under warranty if I had bought it at a store, so that's the issue.  I didn't get sent a bad camera.

I've bought a few used things from both KEH and Adorama and have always been surprised how good the condition was compared to what they were rated.  I would have rated what I got at least one or two notches higher on the scale than what they were.

Funny, I have dealt with all of the non-local store mentioned here over the years.

I love B&H and Calumet for anything new.  KEH is usually my store of choice on the used market.

Right now, I am looking for a 50f1.4.  The 1.8 that came with my used D200 just isn't as good.  Had I not bought the 1.4 in March, I think that I would be happy with the 1.8.  But, it is not a sharp and doesn't focus as close.  The 50f1.4 was just a dream to own.

The problem is that there just are not many out there.  It used to be that the market was full of them, but they don't sell many any more.
